Ah, the monthly visitor! For many of us, the arrival of our period can come with a mix of emotions. Some days it arrives quietly, while on others, it's like a freight train of cramps and cravings. But what if I told you there are ways to embrace your cycle rather than dread it? In this blog post, I’m excited to share how seed cycling, aligning workouts with my cycle, and tracking my period have transformed my monthly experience from dreaded to delightful.
Seed Cycling: Nature’s Secret Weapon
Let’s kick things off with seed cycling. When I heard about this unconventional approach, I was curious. How could something as simple as seeds help regulate hormones? Seed cycling involves eating different seeds at different phases of your menstrual cycle. Specifically, you consume flax and pumpkin seeds during your period and the follicular phase, and switch to sesame and sunflower seeds during the luteal phase.
Here's why it works: Flax and pumpkin seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and zinc, which are known to support hormonal balance during the first half of your cycle. In fact, studies show that omega-3s can help reduce PMS symptoms by nearly 50%. On the other hand, sesame and sunflower seeds are high in vitamin E and magnesium, nutrients that can significantly alleviate symptoms like mood swings and bloating.
Incorporating these seeds into my daily diet was surprisingly easy! I added them to smoothies, oatmeal, and salads without any hassle. Almost immediately, I felt less bloated and more in control of my body, as if my monthly visitor was finally getting the support she needed.
Matching My Workouts to My Cycle
Next, let’s discuss how aligning my workouts with my cycle made a considerable difference. Previously, I adhered to a strict regimen of cardio and strength training. I often pushed myself, even on days when I felt sluggish due to my period. Once I learned to tune into my cycle, everything changed.
I became more aware of how different phases of my menstrual cycle affected my energy levels. During the follicular phase, I felt filled with energy, making it the perfect time for high-intensity workouts and heavy lifting. Conversely, during the luteal phase, especially leading up to my period, I found that gentler activities like yoga or outdoor walks were much more appealing.
This tailored approach not only reduced physical discomfort but also deepened my connection with my body. Working out transformed from a chore into something I genuinely looked forward to. Research suggests that women who engage in exercise aligned with their cycle report a 30% decrease in menstrual-related fatigue.

Tracking My Cycle
Lastly, let’s explore the game-changing practice of tracking my cycle. In the past, I relied on a simple paper calendar or—let’s be honest—my memory, which was not very reliable. With various tracking apps available, I took it up a notch.
Tracking my cycle revealed insights about my body that I had never recognized before. I began to notice patterns in my cycle length, symptoms, moods, and even cravings. For example, I discovered that I often craved chocolate the week before my period, a common PMS symptom. This awareness helped me prepare healthier snacks in advance, reducing the chances of raiding the pantry in a panic.
Beyond the physical aspects, tracking my cycle also empowered me emotionally. I became more aware of why I might feel down or moody during certain phases. Understanding my cycle led me to accept that it was perfectly okay to take things slow and be gentle with myself.
I've been using Flo Period tracker for many, many years now. They have a free version, which I am still using, but they also offer a paid version with more insight into your cycle. What I love about this app is that it learns you. The more information you log, the better it is at telling you upcoming symptoms, why you may be feeling the feels and when you should be ovulating. Which helps to know when you should be switching out your seeds ;) By tracking my cycle, I am able to work with my energy levels. Scheduling events and content creation on my high energy days, and leaning into rest and self-care on my low energy days.
It is worth mentioning that I am not benefiting or getting paid to promote Flo. I genuinely love this app!
The Joy of Listening to My Body
By combining these three practices—seed cycling, aligning workouts with my cycle, and tracking my cycle—I developed a harmonious relationship with my period. It no longer seems like a hassle but a natural part of my life.
These changes have been game-changers in reducing period pain and making my monthly experience feel less overwhelming. I have now learned to navigate my cycle with ease and grace.
Embracing the Process
Of course, the journey was not without its bumps. I faced some trial and error with the foods I consumed and the workouts I chose. But this process is an essential part of learning how to listen to your body.
If you are considering seed cycling or trying to align your workouts with your cycle, I encourage you to start your journey. Take it slow, be patient, and give your body the love and support it deserves.
From Frienemy to Best Friend
Reflecting on my own experience, I can confidently say that my period doesn’t have to be a frenemy. By embracing seed cycling, aligning workouts to my cycle, and diligently tracking my overall health, you, too, can transform your period into your best friend.
Transforming how I perceive my period has improved not only my physical health but also my emotional well-being. The ups and downs of the month no longer feel chaotic but rather resemble a beautiful dance that I am learning to master.
Who knew that by tuning into my body and its natural rhythms, I could reclaim my monthly cycle and turn it into a positive experience? I wish you every success on your journey, and let’s celebrate our bodies and all the wonders they bring!
