It's not hard to believe that Activewear, or what is growing to be known as "athleisure wear" is the fastest growing market and is said to keep climbing. So when it comes to cleaning and keeping it looking fresh & new, it is best to follow these simple tips.
Investing in great activewear is not only great for the pocket (think better quality = less replacements) but it also helps you perform your best in your workouts and day to day tasks.
But with all that being said, washing your pieces so that they can perform and YOU can perform to the best of your ability is just as important as getting that workout in.
Taking care of your workout or athleisure wear doesn’t have to be difficult. Just follow a few simple steps and your clothes will stay looking and smelling fresh.
Here are my tips for keeping my activewear fresh & new.
1. Sort and keep them separate
I have a different basket/place for my activewear. Once it comes off, it goes into its place. This not only makes it easier for the upcoming steps, but I have dogs that shed and this helps with keeping their hair off my items.
2. Prep Your Items
Make sure that all zippers are done up, all clothes are turned inside out & all drawstrings are tied loosely and inside the clothing item. This will cut down on items getting snagged from zippers and the strings from getting tangled.
3. Wash ONLY your activewear in ONE load
I only wash my activewear with my activewear! No other pieces of clothing should be in this load. I once washed jeans with my activewear and the material tore my leggings :(
4. Use cold warm & mild detergents
I wash all my clothes on the cold cycle. Most newer washers work best on this cycle as it is. I also use natural, eco friendly detergent but you do you! Mild detergent is best so not to leave a residue on the materials. Remember, the material is different then your everyday clothes. These pieces have quick dry, sweat wicking, and compressive fibers. Anything harsh will mask these amazing features and your pieces will not perform as well.
5. Don't Use Fabric Softener - EVER
Fabric softeners and workout clothes do not mix well - like oil and water! Fabric softener will break down the elasticity of the fabrics and cause a barrier on the material, which traps the odors and clogs the pores of the technical fabrics (remember the quick dry & sweat wicking?) which will decrease the moisture wicking capabilities.
6. Hang to Dry
Maintaining their shape and fit as well as avoiding damage to the fibers that do not mix well with the high heat of the dryer. The high heat from the dryer can warp the fibers and alter their shape, flexibility and how they fit overall. Hang drying is a great alternative to drying your clothes. It avoids the unnecessary wear and tear of the clothes & helps the environment.

Activewear has evolved from being what you wear to build up a sweat to an everyday essential. Taking these simple steps in mind will keep your activewear looking and fitting brand new over and over again.
Happy sweating :) <3
